Causes of hearing loss

Current research has indicated several factors that contribute to partial or total hearing loss.

Age
Statistics show that the aging process is one of the biggest causes of hearing loss. About 30% of the population over age 65 experiences hearing loss, making it one of the most common complaints among the aging population.

Noise
The deafening background noise of daily life is not only irritating, it’s damaging. In addition to hearing being affected by noise, your whole body can suffer physical consequences as well.

Heredity
About one-third of hearing difficulties present at birth are caused by hereditary factors. If there are cases of hearing loss in your family, there is a high probability that this will be transmitted to your children.

Infections
Several bacterial and viral illnesses (scarlet fever, rubella, meningitis and others) can damage the ear and cause some degree of hearing loss. Otitis, a common illness among young children, can cause irreversible hearing loss if not treated in time.

Otosclerosis
This illness affects the mobility of the small bones in the middle ear. The vibrations transmitted to the inner ear no longer have the same mobility as those in a healthy ear. This, in turn, reduces your hearing efficiency.

Medicines, alcohol, smoking
Some medicines and substances such as alcohol and nicotine can be harmful to your ear and are defined as ototoxic, or toxic for hearing.
